Rotaract Overview

Rotaract is an international youth body that undertakes the process of creating the responsible citizens of the world to bring about that positive change. The organization is made of young adults in the age category of 18 through 30 years. Rotaract is part of the Rotary International family. It’s a parallel world from those who believe they can make a difference. The purpose of Rotaract is to empower young men and women with an opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills that will assist them in their self development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote harmonious relations amongst all people worldwide through commonly shared emotions of friendship and service.

The Movement

Rotaract stands for “Rotary in Action”. It was officially inaugurated by Rotary International President Luther Hodges in January 1968, which means Rotaract Movement is celebrating its 43rd Year. Rotaract Club of North Charlotte, chartered on 13th March 1968 at North California was the first club. The decision to adopt the program came at a time when student protests worldwide were of growing concern to Rotarians. Hence, Rotaract was evolved as the tool to synergise the energies of the young adults into positive activities that could benefit their community. Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth programme. 43 years later it continues to experience its phenomenal growth. There are currently more that 7,500 Rotaract Clubs spread over 155 countries, with an estimated membership of more than 173,000 Rotaractors. The program continues to grow making it a true global movement with motto of ‘Self Development through Service and Fellowship'.
